What is all the talk about attraction marketing and how does it really work?

With the continual change of internet marketing many marketers have modified the way they sell online and have begun using “attraction marketing“. The internet has developed its own terms or language to include a new way of marketing.  Of course when a new trend appears, a clever phrase or word is invented and it gets “talked up” so that we are considered hip or in the know.  Attraction marketing has become just that new trend phrase for an old idea and has re-emerged as the “hot” strategy for selling online.  Attraction marketing includes a couple different processes.

Pre-selling and how do you pre-sell a customer has become the first process?

The easiest example of pre-selling is as follows:  The phone book yellow pages.  I can hear you saying, “WHAT?” But it is true.  I bet right now you have your copy on a shelf or stuffed in a desk drawer.  I also bet you never flip through it just to read the ads… but when you need it - you pull it off the shelf and look for that specific product, company or service you need.  Right?  Thought so.

Please realize that the phone book yellow pages did not sell you anything.  You as a customer initiated the sale yourself.  This just happens to be the very first part of attraction marketing ~ the customer initiates the sale.  Another example would be an auto parts store.  Simply put they sell auto parts but many also do auto repairs so while the customer is shopping for parts he is also shown that auto repairs are available too.  So the customer has the ability to ask questions he might have concerning a needed repair.  By doing this the customer is attracted to the store.  Your specific area is auto parts, information is given for free, and the customer begins to show loyalty to the auto parts store.  In the end this is called attraction marketing.  The auto parts store does not need to do cold calls, send out fliers, or hold a special sale… the customers are simply attracted to them.

Many internet guru’s will try to lay claim to inventing attraction marketing but they are wrong.  One good example to prove my point would be the local enclosed shopping mall.  In the 70’s shopping malls were the neatest thing around.  They quickly became a place to hang out and be seen.  A place to meet other people.  Or a place to exercise by walking when the doctor says to walk but the weather is cold.  Shopping malls encouraged these types of activities by having free concerts, offering your child’s picture with Santa and other subtle attraction marketing ideas.

With the development of the internet, like the shopping mall, it has become a place to meet to exchange views.  And as the internet grew with adding graphics and interactivity, and games it began to chip away at the shopping malls place.  People now go to the internet to meet people, to have fun and to learn new things.  With the entrance of Google  the internet quickly replaced the Yellow Pages.  People began searching for auto parts and repairs online and it was not long before the business owners took notice.

Businesses began using attraction marketing on the internet.

Business owners were quick to see their customer base shrinking and attributed it to the internet.  Soon business owners began using the internet as an attraction and marketed to the much larger customer base.  Soon they found that there was also loyalty and these customers came back to shop again and again when the customer was provided products and services that were easy to find.

In the end everyone uses attraction marketing to win customers and then to keep them.

The biggest bonus to the business owner is in advertising.  No longer did they have to advertise in several printed publications in their local area.  Now they were able to market to anyone worldwide.  Attraction marketing pulls the customers to the business owners site.  These customers would be more qualified because they are looking for the product the business owner is selling.  This streamlines the customer base to people interested in your product or service.

Attraction marketing has become a staple to not only big business but to small business to.  It is here to stay because it works!

Work From Home With An Online Business…sounds easy enough that anyone can do it?

When you begin to contemplate using your home computer to earn extra income you suddenly realize that there are thousands of internet businesses that want you to join them.  Everyone of them shows a glittering welcome page with lots of money, flashy sport cars, huge yachts and lets not forget that BIG house!  They use a lot of fancy terms such as completely automated, easy plug and play, set it and forget it, and the best one…if I can do it so can you…just follow my examples and you will be making six figure income within 30 days.  Most of the ads just happen to forget to tell you about the upfront costs, the added monthly costs and best of all the upgraded level costs.

In this year, 2008, we must admit that we were dazzled by some of these same hype hawkers…yes, we too thought the glitter was real gold.  So we can speak from experience about the good, the bad and sometimes the down right ugly hyped programs available today.  You see we were in the mortgage business for just over 15 years when we were called for an office meeting one day and shaazaam - just like that our office was closed the very next day and at the boomer age of 58 we became unemployed.   No we were not the bad mortgage people that you hear about but it did not matter.  We were out in the cold.

Panic set in and we tried to figure out how to even put together a resume.  It had been 15 years with the company and the last resume was typed on an IBM Selectric typewriter.  Wow how far we have come.  Not to bore you with details - mortgage people are not being hired these days because the real estate, financial and credit areas of our economy were heading for a bump in the road.  Well that bump became a tsunami and it swallowed a lot of people that worked in or around real estate.  And we began to hear that we were over qualified…which in English means ‘too old’.  Boy did that bruise egos! You know being out of work was kind of fun at first until we realized that neither one was bringing in any money at all.  Our savings from over the years started a downward trend that went much faster down than it had when it was going up.

Okay so we took a deep breath,  brushed ourselves off and began searching for a way to “work from home with an online business”.  We are guilty of succumbing to some of the famous glitzy hype hawkers.  We began falling for almost any sales pitch because it sounded good and we needed to get money rolling in.  Heck we would settle for five figure or even four figure income.  Why be choosy?  It did not take us long to realize what fools we were.  Yes, we fell for the hype hawkers and bought all kinds of out of the box make money quick schemes.  We began justifying the monthly charges for the website and the added cost to upgrade our program from gold to platinum.  Several of the sure bet programs just did not make a dime, the clock continued ticking and our savings kept going the wrong way.

About 2 months into the new online internet business we were beginning to become disenchanted with the whole mess.  Nothing was bringing in any income worth talking about, the people who we signed up with that guaranteed personal team training where progressively missing in action and our savings was quickly reaching the red danger zone.  We had stopped looking at all of the get rich online programs because we had already experienced a bunch of them with no six figure results to show.

One day we stumbled upon the web site of a soft spoken man who seemed earnest and sincere.  His presentation was very captivating and was lacking the hype of all the others.  He actually just spoke truthfully and with a sincerity that was refreshing.  The best part of his presentation was when he invited everyone to visit one of his personalized training classes that he did nightly with his team members.  There was no pressure applied, no pay me now, no big fancy houses, no test you had to pass to enter the training.  Believe it or not the training was free!  Free!  However, after attending other seminars we were still skeptical…and the money was continuing to flow out of our accounts.

We actually attended about 4 classes before joining his team.  Every class was aimed at improving the way we conducted our business online.  He gave ideas of things to do that were free, things that cost a little money and things that were expensive.  This gave everyone an avenue to travel which was best for their particular pocketbook or you could choose not to do any of them.  The fact that this person came out of the real estate field gave us a common ground to begin building our foundation on.  We learned just how and where to start to build and began implementing the steps to get the best results.

It is true that today’s online businesses often fail because people do not know or do not have an understanding of how to attract quality traffic to their website and then the ability to convert that traffic into sales.  Most hype sellers immediately talk you into doing pay per click advertising but neglect to tell you the pitfalls or tricks that search engines play.  Left unattended that system will take every cent you have and then throw you aside.

So in closing we must say the best way to work from home with an online business is to find the right team to work with.  And test that team by attending their meetings (if they have them) several times.  Get comfortable with the direction that team is heading and let yourself begin to understand the program or programs the team is involved with.  One program might not be right for you so choose a team that offers alternative products or services.  Don’t settle for the one size fits all program that most hype hawkers promote.  Look for the flexible teams that promote more than one product.
